We are happy to announce that Dr. Jessi Wells has been named our infectious diseases fellowship program director! Dr. Wells is no stranger to program leadership, having most recently served as interim program director and as the leader of the Clinical Competency Committee for the program. We interviewed Dr. Wells to discuss “Why Wake?” and some of her favorite things about our program.

What are some of your favorite things about working at Wake Forest?
I genuinely feel valued and supported at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Since joining, my career has been revitalized through diverse clinical challenges, collaboration with colleagues, and an environment that fosters learning and growth. Our team is committed to patient-centered care. Being part of this community has been incredibly rewarding.
What makes Wake special?
What truly makes Wake special is the people. Our patients come from diverse backgrounds and enrich our lives with their stories and experiences. The working community here is kind, vibrant, and deeply engaged in the care we provide. There is a shared focus on taking care of patients and each other in the best way possible.
What do you think fellows should know about our program?
Prospective fellows should know that this program is a supportive environment where they will be truly valued as members of the team. Fellows will be challenged to practice thoughtful, evidence-based medicine, with close mentorship from attending physicians. Faculty are deeply invested in the growth and clinical training of our fellows. This is a program that takes patient care seriously while also prioritizing the mentorship, well-being, and professional development of our fellows.

How do you like living in Winston-Salem?
After having lived in six different cities, Winston-Salem is my favorite place to call home. It offers an outstanding combination of beautiful weather and terrain paired with a low cost of living and minimal traffic. The city has a vibrant arts and food scene, great outdoor concerts, walking trails, and greenways. It’s an easy drive to the mountains and ski slopes. Additionally, the beach is close enough for a weekend trip. My family has enjoyed many opportunities to participate in sports, music, and community theater. Altogether, Winston-Salem provides a setting in which I am deeply content and fulfilled.
