Dr. Ryan Maves is an infectious disease and critical care physician at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Professor of Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine, where he provides specialized care for patients with compromised immune systems. He works closely with transplant and cancer care teams to treat and prevent complex infections, and he also practices in the intensive care units at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center, caring for critically ill patients with respiratory failure and shock. Dr. Maves earned his MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed his internship, residency in internal medicine, and fellowships in infectious diseases and critical care medicine at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
Prior to joining Wake Forest, Dr. Maves spent 22 years on active duty in the U.S. Navy, during which he held numerous leadership and academic roles, including Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine and Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Naval Medical Center San Diego. His service included deployments as a flight surgeon aboard the USS George Washington in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and as Director of Medical Services for a NATO medical unit in Kandahar, Afghanistan, as well as overseas research leadership in South America. His research focuses on clinical trials for vaccines and therapeutics, as well as disaster preparedness during public health emergencies. Dr. Maves has been widely recognized for excellence in teaching and clinical care, receiving multiple distinguished awards for medical education and mentorship throughout his career.
